Monsters University Set to Beat The Heat and White House Down For Weekend Win

Monsters University is expected to win a packed weekend at the box office, with the Pixar prequel on pace for roughly $51 million and a second straight victory.

The animated family flick should be followed by the Sandra BullockMelissa McCarthy buddy cop action comedy The Heat at approximately $40 million.

White House Down, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, is set to collide with Brad Pitt’s World War Z in a battle for third place.

Both movies are tracking toward about $31 million.

Man of Steel should finish in the #5 spot with $20 million.

Apocalyptic comedy This Is The End is on pace for $9 million and sixth place, followed by magician heist spectacle Now You See Me ($5.5 million).

Fast & Furious 6 ($2.5 million), Star Trek Into Darkness ($2 million) and The Internship ($1.5 million) should round out the Top 10.

Brad Pitt Cancels World War Z Red Carpet And Screening Due to Unrest in Brazil

Brad Pitt cancelled his trip to Brazil — where he was to promote World War Z on Monday — due to unrest in the country.

The South American nation has been rocked by huge demonstrations over a slew of of issues, including a transportation rate hike, alleged political corruption, and what’s perceived as excessive spending to host the upcoming 2014 World Cup soccer tournament.

In light of the protests, Pitt bailed on the red carpet and screening of the film in Rio, with Paramount Pictures noting in a statement that those involved with the film send their “respect and goodwill toward the people of Brazil at this time of national unrest.”

Monsters University Beats World War Z and Man of Steel For Weekend Win

Monsters University, the Pixar prequel to Monsters Inc., topped zombies and Superman at the box office this weekend.

The animated family film earned $81.1 million in its debut.

The week’s other new picture, World War Z, the zombie pandemic epic starring Brad Pitt, raked in $66 million.

Meanwhile, last week’s champ, Man of Steel, hit the $41 million mark.

In fourth and fifth were This Is The End and Now You See Me with $12.6 million and $8.1 million, respectively.

Rounding out the top 10 were Fast & Furious 6 ($4.8 million), The Purge ($3.3 million), The Internship ($3.3 million), Star Trek into Darkness ($3 million), Iron Man 3 ($2.1 million).
