Vanessa Hudgens appears on the cover of PAPER, and the Spring Breakers star opens up about her naked photo scandal, snorting vitamin B, and leaving behind her tween queen background for more adult roles.
“In 10,000 hours, they say you can master anything. 10,000 hours in Disneyland and you’re the queen of Disney,” jokes Hudgens, who wound up rocketing to fame as the star of three High School Musical movies, after spending countless days at the iconic park near where she grew up in Anaheim, California.
Her first break from a squeaky-clean image was inadvertent, when naked pictures she took of herself leaked online.
“That was just a really sh*tty situation that sucked,” recalls Hudgens. “That was by far the worst moment of my career.”
Her upcoming role in the sex, drugs and violence-soaked world of Spring Breakers is part of Hudgens’ transition into a different kind of film career.
“It’s always been hard for actors to cross that bridge but honestly, you have to hold out and do what you think is right for yourself,” explains the actress, crediting director Harmony Korine for believing in her.
She says, “Harmony took a really big jump in hiring me and [co-stars] Selena [Gomez] and [ABC Family actress] Ashley [Benson].”
At one point in the movie, Hudgens and Benson “make James [Franco] our b*tch” in an intense, violent manner that she tells the magazine wasn’t so hard: “You sit there. You’re smoking your fake blunts. You just do it.”
To simulate cocaine use, the actresses snorted crushed-up vitamin B, which had a very real effect.
“We would run around set like mad men, and people would wonder, ‘Did you switch that out with anything?’” says Hudgens.
In addition to Spring Breakers, Hudgens is set to play a drug-addicted prostitute in Frozen Ground, a dramatization of the events surrounding real-life serial killer Robert Hansen.
She explains, ”Ever since I was young, I wanted to play really heavy and intense roles and really push myself in a dramatic direction. So I was like, ‘A prostitute! I can play a prostitute! This is going to be exciting.”
