Neil Patrick Harris opened the Tony Awards with an entertaining musical number that TMZ, The Daily Mail and other outlets are now trying to mar by falsely suggesting the actor dropped the N-word in Mike Tyson’s face.

The bizarre allegation — that Harris would use a racial epithet with Tyson during a much-rehearsed national TV performance — tries to create confusion about a lyric in which the “How I Met Your Mother” star clearly uses the word “bigger.”

TMZ writes, “We’ve played it back dozens of times, and can’t come up with another explanation [than Harris using the N-word].”

He didn’t use it.

This is a phony controversy.

On Monday, Harris tweeted, “Really, Daily Mail?!? The N-word? That’s your story?!? I would NEVER be so disrespectful and frankly, neither should you.”

We couldn’t agree more.

In fact, Andrew Rannells (“The New Normal”), Megan Hilty (“Smash”), and Laura Benanti (“The Playboy Club” and “Go On”) have all seen their NBC series recently canceled.

The stars sang an amusing ode to their dashed television dreams at the Tonys.

Neil Patrick Harris opened the 2013 Tony Awards promising a “bigger” shower than ever before.

He received some help from Mike Tyson, who danced on stage, joked about Shia LaBeouf’s controversial exit from “Orphans,” and made a dig at Les Miserables for touting its live singing when Broadway stars do it “eight times a week.”

Harris also gave a moving shout out to the aspiring young stars watching from home and dreaming of being on Broadway.

“I promise you, all of you out there now, we were that kid,” said the host.

There was also a pretty cool magic trick.
