Catching Fire Gobbles Up Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office, Breaks More Records

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire continued its box office rampage through the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The franchise blockbuster earned $110.2 million for the Wednesday-through-Sunday period, enough to stay atop the chart for a second consecutive week.

That amount also breaks previous 3-day and 5-day record totals for Thanksgiving weekend.

The new animated Disney film Frozen wrapped up second place with $90.6 million, earning the biggest Thanksgiving weekend opening ever.

Thor: The Dark World was #3 with $14.4 million, beating The Best Man Holiday ($11.8 million) and Delivery Man ($8.8 million).

Rounding out the Top 10 were new Jason StathamJames Franco release Homefront ($8.8 million), The Book Thief ($6 million), Black Nativity ($4 million), Philomena ($4 million), and Last Vegas ($3.6 million).

Thor: The Dark World Edges The Best Man Holiday for Weekend Box Office Win

Thor: The Dark World fended off a strong challenge from The Best Man Holiday for the weekend box office crown.

The superhero sequel starring Chris Hemsworth took in about $38.5 million and another triumph.

The ensemble follow-up Best Man Holiday opened with a respectable $30.6 million and second place.

Last Vegas ($8.9 million) and Free Birds ($8.3 million) landed in third and fourth, respectively.

In fifth came Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa ($7.7 million).

Rounding out the Top 10 were Gravity ($6.3 million), Ender’s Game ($6.2 million) 12 Years a Slave ($4.7 million), Captain Phillips ($4.5 million), and About Time ($3.5 million).

Thor: The Dark World hammered the box office competition to a big weekend win.

The superhero sequel hit $86 million in its debut.

That total easily outpaced Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa ($11.3 million), which ranked second.

The animated Free Birds ($11.2 million) and Last Vegas ($11.1 million) battled it out for third and fourth places, respectively.

The sci-fi adaptation Ender’s Game landed ($10.3 million).

Rounding out the Top 10 were Gravity ($8.4 million), 12 Years a Slave ($6.6 million), Captain Phillips ($5.8 million), About Time ($5.2 million), and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 ($2.8 million).
