Seth Meyers Officially Named Host of Late Night, Replacing Jimmy Fallon

Truth rating: 10

Seth Meyers has officially been announced as the new host of “Late Night,” and will replace Jimmy Fallon, who’s taking over “The Tonight Show” from Jay Leno next year.

It had been rumored for some time that the “Weekend Update” anchor for “Saturday Night Live” would get the job.

The show, as expected, will stay in New York, where Lorne Michaels will produce “Late Night,” as well as “The Tonight Show” and “Saturday Night Live.”

“We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation,” said NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt in a statement, adding, “His years at SNL’s ‘Weekend Update’ desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the ‘Late Night’ franchise.”

Of his new appointment, Meyers cracked, “I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car.”

He said more seriously, “12:30 on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice.”

Seth Meyers to Replace Jimmy Fallon, Take Over As Late Night Host?

Truth rating: 7

Seth Meyers is reportedly the frontrunner to take over “Late Night” if Jimmy Fallon replaces Jay Leno as host of “The Tonight Show” next year.

It’s expected that Fallon will make the jump to 11:30 p.m. in 2014, in which case “Late Night” will need its fourth host, following David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Fallon.

The New York Post and other outlets are reporting that Meyers, currently the “Weekend Update” anchor for “Saturday Night Live,” will be the pick.

“SNL” mastermind Lorne Michaels also produces “Late Night,” and is said to favor having Meyers make the transition.

The possible Meyers choice has NOT been confirmed.

Last year, Meyers was in the running to replace Regis Philbin as Kelly Ripa’s morning show co-host, but the job ultimately went to Michael Strahan.
