“Saturday Night Live” held under-the-radar auditions for potential black female cast members last week.
Following recent criticism of the show’s lack of diversity, a group of funny African-American women convened for a showcase at the Groundlings theater in Los Angeles.
Comedian Bresha Webb was among those auditioning, and tells Jasmine Brand, “The audition came about from an inside source from ‘SNL.’ I don’t think any of us had a clue about the showcase until two days prior.”
“It was an awesome opportunity even though it was such a short notice but, if you stay ready you ain’t gotta get ready and we were READY! Lol But we were all honored to be selected,” she added.
She also posted Instagram pics of the event (see above and below).
“This is what happens after us talented black women showcase for SNL we thank God and praise him for the opportunity and the blessing! So inspired and we all killed that ish tonight!” wrote Webb.
Other women comedians involved included Simone Shepherd, Tiffany Haddish and Damirra Brunson.
With Seth Meyers set to leave for “Late Night” in February, the show has reportedly been gearing up to add a new cast member mid-season.
