Lindsay Lohan was a no-show at The Canyons premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday night, but the movie’s director Paul Schrader says that’s nothing new for the star.

Schrader told reporters at a press conference that he feels like a “free man” now that promotion for the film is concluding.

He said, “For the last 16 months I’ve been hostage, by own choosing, to a very talented but unpredictable actress. She was supposed to be here today, she said she would be, but she is not.”

Schrader added, “She is a great actress… but her behavior is unspeakable.”

Lohan, meanwhile, wrote about the movie’s premiere on her blog, saying, “I wish I could be there to celebrate with you in Venice. Paul Schrader, @braxtonpope, @JamesDeen could not have done it without you.”

Lindsay Lohan is receiving high praise from her Canyons director, Paul Schrader.

In a piece penned for Film Comment, Schrader draws parallels between Lohan and Marilyn Monroe’s professional and private lives, but says Lohan has more raw talent than the screen icon.

The filmmaker offers, “I think Lohan has more natural acting talent than Monroe did, but, like Monroe, her weakness is her inability to fake it.”

Schrader explains that Lohan “feels she must be experiencing an emotion in order to play it,” noting, “This leads to all sorts of emotional turmoil, not to mention on-set delays and melodrama.”

The director adds that while his time shooting with Lohan was fraught with “tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama,” he feels it was a “treat” to work with the troubled star.

Schrader shares, “All the drama, the mishegas, all the stress—that means little. A director can shoot around misbehavior. He can’t shoot around lack of charisma.”

“I just wish it was easier for Lindsay,” the director admits.

Lohan has been compared to Monroe many times in the past, and has channeled the legendary actress in a number of photo shoots.

What do you think of Schrader saying Lohan has more natural talent that Monroe?
