The Purge Scares Its Way To Shocking Box Office Win Ahead of Fast & Furious 6

The Purge, starring Ethan Hawke, won the weekend’s top spot with a shocking $36.4 million at the box office.

That was well more than industry expectations, and enough to beat Fast & Furious 6, which took second place with $19.8 million.

The magician heist thriller Now You See Me came in third with $19.5 million.

Fourth and fifth places went to the Vince VaughnOwen Wilson comedy The Internship and Epic, with $18.1 million and $12.1 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Star Trek Into Darkness, ($11.7 million), the Will and Jaden Smith film After Earth ($11.2 million), The Hangover Part III ($7.4 million), Iron Man 3 ($5.8 million), and The Great Gatsby ($4.2 million)

Fast & Furious 6 Wins Weekend Over After Earth and Now You See Me

Fast & Furious 6 has raced out to another big lead and is expected to win the weekend box office for a second straight week.

The Vin Diesel-starring action flick is on pace for $35 million.

Two new releases — the magician heist thriller Now You See Me and the Will and Jaden Smith sci-fi spectacular After Earth — are in a tight competition for second place, with both movies on target for roughly $27 million.

Meanwhile, a trio of holdovers are battling for the #4 spot.

The Hangover Part III, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Epic are all tracking toward approximately $15 million for the weekend.

Iron Man 3 is looking at an eighth place finish with $6 million or so.

The Bollywood film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deew and the Matthew McConaughey drama Mud are both on pace for $1.2 million to round out the Top 10 chart.
