A statement purportedly from Morgan Freeman that blasts the media for its coverage of the Newtown, Connecticut massacre is fake.

On Saturday, a lengthy comment — allegedly from the actor — began circulating on social media sites.

In it, Morgan allegedly slams news outlets, specifically CNN and Fox News, for the attention paid to gunman Adam Lanza, who horrifyingly killed 26 people — 20 of them children — at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday.

The statement attempts to correlate the rise in mass killings with the media’s focus on the person or people responsible, saying, “It’s because of the way the media reports it. Turn on the news and see how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities.”

“So congratulations, sensationalist media, you’ve just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or maternity ward next,” the comment reads, imploring people to “help by turning off the news.”

But a rep for Morgan tells Gossip Cop that he NEVER wrote the statement, much less posted it online.

Morgan’s camp is unsure how the diatribe became attributed to him, telling us, “The fact that he did not do this or had knowledge of [it] speaks volumes.”
