Project X, about an out-of-control teen party, was the most pirated movie of 2012, according to TorrentFreak.
SEE TOP 10 BELOW
The site has released its list of the films downloaded most often on file-sharing service BitTorrent over the past year, and Project X finished a surprising #1 with approximately 8.72 million illegal downloads.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (8.5 million) and The Dark Knight Rises (8.23 million) took second and third place, respectively.
Of course, the chart is far from exact.
TorrentFreak collected data from major BitTorrent trackers between January 1, 2012 and mid-December, but the numbers are still a very incomplete picture of overall movie pirating activities.
But the list is an interesting look at what people were most interested in torrenting this year, with blockbusters tending to dominate the Top 10.
It should be noted that some of the movies on the list debuted in theaters in late 2011, although the estimates here are for downloads of the film during 2012.
