Mindy Kaling Shoots Down ELLE Cover Controversy: I Feel “Glamourous & Cool”

Mindy Kaling is not nearly as upset about her ELLE cover as everyone else seems to be.

The comedian and actress is one of several funny women to grace the cover of the magazine’s “Women in TV” issue — Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel and Allison Williams are the others — except a number of outlets have tried to stir controversy by pointing out that the other three women’s bodies are pictured in full color, while Kaling’s shot is black-and-white and close up (see right and below).

ELLE was bashed last year for featuring a cover image of Melissa McCarthy wearing an oversized coat, and observers are pouncing on the magazine once again for what they believe is unfair treatment of Kaling.

Except Kaling doesn’t see it that way.

On Tuesday, she tweeted, “Wishing for more skin on my @ELLEmagazine cover? Chris Messina & I are naked on a brand new #themindyproject tonight, ya pervs! 930/830 FOX.”

Kaling continued, “(It’s actually, coincidentally, true. Thank heavens my writers constantly script nudity. So: super funny, totally nude Chris/Mindy tonight!).”

She then joked, “I love my @ELLEmagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me.”

Lena Dunham was among those who enjoyed the “Saturday Night Live” parody of her HBO show “Girls,” which included the introduction of a new “girl” from Albania named Blerta, played by Tina Fey.

Dunham was caught watching the spoof in a photo taken by her pal Mindy Kaling.

Kaling first tweeted, “Watching @lenadunham enjoy Blerta on #snl’s #girls in my living room,” followed by an Instagram pic (below) with the message, “Original Girl enjoying Blerta on #snl’s Girls at my house @lenadunham.”

For her part, Dunham later tweeted, “The SNL parody of Girls was a true honor.”

“Very excited about the current lineup of SNL ladies. They are funny like whoa,” she added.

New “SNL” cast member Noel Wells played the “Hannah” role in the parody, while Vanessa Bayer was “Shoshanna,” and Cecily Strong spoofed “Marnie.”

Mindy Kaling: I’m NOT Republican

11:53 am, September 19th, 2013

Mindy Kaling is clearing up some confusion about her politics after a widely spread report said she was Republican.

The writer-actress set the record straight after an article on Salon entitled “Republican Mindy Kaling Brings Gun-Rights Humor to Her Show” mistook a joke on “The Mindy Project” and a spoof section in her book as evidence of personal political conservatism.

When a reporter tweeted, “I didn’t know Mindy Kaling is a Republican,” the star replied, “I’m not, it is bewildering!

Asked to clarify, Kaling wrote, “Yeah, it’s like assuming Alec Baldwin has Jack Donaghy’s politics or something. It is so weird and funny to me and my staff.”

Famously liberal in real life, Baldwin portrayed arch-conservative Donaghy on “30 Rock.”

When a second reporter tweeted that the original story seemed to misunderstand a gag on “The Mindy Project,” Kaling responded, “I’m glad you saw that too! None of it’s true, but I kind don’t want to entertain it cuz it’s ridiculous.”
