Matthew Perry is set to bring “The Odd Couple” back to TV.

The “Friends” alum will star as messy Oscar Madison in an updated version of the classic sitcom for CBS.

“Ever since seeing the movie The Odd Couple when I was 10 years old, it has been a dream for me to play Oscar Madison,” he said in a statement. “To be given the opportunity to develop a modern version of it for CBS has put a permanent smile across my face.

It’s not been announced who will play fussy Felix Unger opposite Perry’s Madison.

Perry would also serve as the co-writer and executive producer, according to Deadline.

“The Odd Couple” has been a Broadway stage show, a Hollywood movie, and an iconic TV series, with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall starring in the latter.

Perry has had a number of television starring vehicles since “Friends” left the air in 2004 — including “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and “Go On.”

The two stars talked about their nostalgia for the show when Perry recently guest hosted “Piers Morgan Tonight.”

Perry told Kudrow that he’d said in an interview, “If I had a time machine, I would like to go back to 2004 and not have stopped.”

She concurred.

“If it were up to us, like individually… Oh, I would keep going,” said Kudrow. “There would have come a time anyway when someone would have said, ‘We’ve had enough.’ But why not have fun until they do?”

Matthew Perry Opens Up About Addictions: “I Couldn’t Stop”

Truth rating: 10

1:55 pm, July 2nd, 2013

(People)

Matthew Perry opens up in the new issue of People about the years he spent abusing alcohol and prescription pills.

The actor, who says his time on “Friends” overlapped with the worst of his addiction, shares that despite the “white hot flame of fame,” those years were incredibly “lonely.”

“I had a big problem with pills and alcohol, and I couldn’t stop,” he says.

Perry remembers that he was often “painfully hungover” during filming of the hit sitcom, until “things got so bad I couldn’t hide it and everybody knew.”

The problem wasn’t being “a massive party guy.” Instead, he says he would “come home, light some candles, have a drink, watch a movie that was slightly over my head and label myself something ridiculous like a misunderstood artist.”

While he admits he used to be “a hopelessly narcissistic guy,” these days Perry is helping other addicts, having turned his Malibu mansion into a sober-living home called Perry House.

As for his plans for the future, Perry would like to start a family.

“I think I’d make a great dad and I think shortly I’d make a great husband,” he says.
