“I feel good,” the performer told Jay Leno, despite the largely negative reaction to the track, which addresses racial stereotypes and lingering attitudes regarding slavery and the South.

The “NCIS: Los Angeles” star continued, “The song wasn’t perfect. You can’t fit 300 or 400 years of history into a three or four minute song.”

Cool J went on to note that he “can’t defend the song, but I can clarify my intentions.”

“I in no way would ever compare the history of the Confederate flag… with a do-rag,” he said, referencing one of the lyrics. “However, when you think about a kid like Trayvon Martin and you think about some of the things that happen in society based on clothing, when you put it in this proper context, it makes sense.”

(The Ellen Show)

Brad Paisley attempted to explain his controversial new collaboration with LL Cool J, “Accidental Racist,” on Tuesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

The country star told the host, “I don’t know if any of you noticed, but there’s some racial tension, here and there,” adding that the song “kind of deals with that.”

Paisley noted, “I felt like when we were writing this song it wasn’t necessarily up to the media. I don’t really trust sort of, I guess, Hollywood… or sort of talk radio or anything like that to deal with that anymore. I think it’s music’s turn to have the conversation.”

DeGeneres prompted, “So, but you’re basically saying…” to which Paisley responded, “I don’t know,” before vaguely explaining how the song brought together a “proud Southerner” and a “black New Yorker.”

On the track, featured on Paisley’s new album Wheelhouse, the country star sings about being ”caught between southern pride and southern blame,” as the region still deals with the ramifications of slavery and ongoing black/white stereotypes.

Paisley’s lines include, “I’m just a white man comin’ to you from the southland/Tryin’ to understand what it’s like not to be/I’m proud of where I’m from but not everything we’ve done/And it ain’t like you and me can re-write history.”

In LL Cool J’s verse, he shares the perspective of being a black man getting judged, rapping, “Just because my pants are saggin’ doesn’t mean I’m up to no good.”

“I guess we’re both guilty of judgin’ the cover not the book/I’d love to buy you a beer, conversate and clear the air/But I see that red flag and I think you wish I wasn’t here,” he raps.

LL Cool J was in attendance at Sunday’s ACM Awards, along with Paisley.
