Richard Belzer is leaving “Law & Order: SVU.”

The actor, who has played cop John Munch on the show since it began in 1999, originated the role for “Homicide: Life on the Street” in 1993.

On Wednesday’s episode of “SVU,” it was revealed that Munch had filed his retirement papers.

The October 16 broadcast will feature a goodbye to the character at his retirement party.

It’s expected that Belzer could return occasionally in a guest star capacity.

The character was featured in hundreds of “Homicide” and “SVU” episodes, also popping up on shows like “The X Files,” “The Beat,” “The Wire,” and the original “Law & Order.”

Law & Order: SVU Episode to Combine Paula Deen, Trayvon Martin Plots: Report

4:56 pm, August 22nd, 2013

(Getty Images)

“Law & Order: SVU” will reportedly combine this summer’s Paula Deen and Trayvon Martin stories into one racially charged episode during the show’s upcoming 15th season.

According to TV Guide, Cybill Shepherd will portray Jolene Castille, a Southern restaurant owner who shoots and kills an unarmed black teenager wearing a hoodie in New York.

Her character is said to justify the action as self-defense.

The reported plot seems to combine a character like Deen (whose admission that she used the N-word crippled her cooking empire) and George Zimmerman’s controversial fatal shooting of Martin in what he claimed to be self-defense.

“SVU” has long ripped stories from the headlines, including an episode last season that appeared to be a (very) thinly veiled take on Chris Brown and Rihanna’s complicated history.

“Law & Order: SVU” is set to air an episode that appears to be a thinly veiled take on Chris Brown and Rihanna’s complicated history.

A promo for the upcoming broadcast — called “Funny Valentine,” and featuring a familiar-looking celebrity couple and domestic violence — has now debuted.

NBC’s description of the episode explains, “A promising singer is brutally attacked by her boyfriend, a popular hip-hop star,” and the accompanying visuals certainly call to mind the infamous 2009 incident in which Brown assaulted Rihanna.
