The singer, who expressed her gratitude to fans in a letter from prison over the summer, is commemorating her release with a new song called “Consumerism.”

Hill’s track features her speeding through a rap on cultural ills.

In a message on her Tumblr page, the performer explains:

“I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn’t imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it’s level.”

Lauryn Hill Writes Letter to Fans From Jail

Truth rating: 10

Lauryn Hill has written a letter to her supporters from behind bars.

The outspoken musician is currently serving a three-month jail sentence for tax evasion, and a new message was posted to her Tumblr page on Saturday, expressing gratitude to her fans.

Hill singled out a number of individuals by name for their support, and the person who posted the letter to Tumblr passed along the singer’s wish that everyone know “she is doing well.”

The letter itself reads:

I have known since very young to look for the purpose and lesson in everything, including the trials.  Although it has taken some adjustment, I cannot deny the favor I have encountered while in here, and general warm reception from a community of people who despite their circumstances, have found unique ways to make the best of them.  Thank you for the letters of concern and well wishes that I receive in the mail every day.  Although I may not be able to write everyone back, please know that they have been received, read, acknowledged, and appreciated.

With Love back, MLH.

Lauryn Hill Sentenced to Three Months in Prison For Not Paying Taxes

Truth rating: 10

6:14 pm, May 6th, 2013

Lauryn Hill, who pled guilty in 2012 to failing to pay taxes of around $1 million, was sentenced to three months in prison on Monday.

She had faced a maximum of three years behind bars — a year for each of the three counts of not paying taxes in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

The Grammy winner told the court during her sentencing, “I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that.”

She didn’t, however, explain why she decided to drop out of performing or why she stopped paying taxes.

When news of Hill’s tax evasion initially broke a year ago, she wrote a lengthy blog post explaining she didn’t file her returns because she chose to live “underground” for the “safety” of her family.

Hill noted at the time that she faithfully paid her taxes while she was “working consistently,” and “only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.”

It is not clear yet where or when the former Fugees singer will report to prison.

What do you think of Hill being sentence to prison?
