Jeff Hanneman of Slayer Dead at 49

Jeff Hanneman of Slayer has died.

He was 49.

The guitarist and founding member of the popular metal band was in a hospital on Thursday when his liver failed.

Slayer confirmed the sad news on Facebook:

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Hanneman founded Slayer with fellow guitarist Kerry King in 1981.

The Grammy-winning band became one of the biggest acts in thrash metal, rising to prominence alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax in the 1980s and 1990s.
