Jay Z has announced that he will go forward with his Barneys partnership in the wake of racial profiling accusations against the luxury retailer.

There had been question in recent weeks over whether the rapper-mogul would pursue his business collaboration with the company after two separate incidents in which black customers at the flagship Barneys store in New York were detained under questionable circumstances.

On Friday, Jay Z made a statement on his website, announcing his decision to stick with Barneys while taking a leadership role on the issue of racial profiling:

“In the past several weeks two separate investigations were launched as a result of the wrongful detention of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips. My team has been privy to the status of the Barneys third party consultant investigation. In continuing our research, we also contacted the New York State Attorney General’s office for the status of their investigation into both Barneys and Macy’s. Those findings are not yet available.”

“While I await the findings of the Attorney General’s Office, I have agreed to move forward with the launch of BNY SCC collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling. I am in a unique position to use my voice to affect change to this disturbing issue. The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. I will not leave the outcome to others. I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.”

“As I previously stated, the collaboration with Barneys has always been about giving and The Shawn Carter Foundation. From this collection, the Foundation will receive not only 25% of sales, it will now receive the additional 75% of Barneys’ sales, totalling 100% of all sales from BNY SCC. Along with 100% of sales from the collaboration, the Foundation will receive an additional 10% of all retail sales from Barneys New York stores nationwide and Barneys.com on November 20th.”

Jay Z on Barneys New York Racial Profiling Controversy: ‘Why Am I Being Demonized?’

Truth rating: 10

Jay Z is hitting back at critics who have demanded he immediately cut ties with Barneys New York in the wake of several racial profiling accusations made against the luxury retailer.

The company has been accused of detaining at least two black customers in separate incidents, allegedly believing they were committing fraud after making expensive purchases at a Manhattan Barneys location.

In the ensuing controversy, a Change.org petition has garnered more than 14,000 signatures calling for Jay Z to denounce the high-end store and pull out of their planned holiday season collaboration, which is slated to include merchandise and window decorations inspired by the performer.

But on Saturday, the music mogul took to his website to explain why, up until now, he has remained silent about the growing racial profiling issue and his partnership with the company.

“I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys,” wrote the rapper, asking, “Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately?”

Jay Z stressed that he’s not profiting from his relationship with Barneys, explaining, “The Shawn Carter Foundation is the beneficiary and the foundation is receiving 25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys.”

“This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning,” he said, adding, “Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project, wouldn’t hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education.”

This collaboration lives in a place of giving and is about the Foundation. I am not making a dime from this collection; I do not stand to make millions, as falsely reported. I need to make that fact crystal clear. The Shawn Carter Foundation is the beneficiary and the foundation is receiving 25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys. This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning. My idea was born out of creativity and charity… not profit.

I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys. Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately? The negligent, erroneous reports and attacks on my character, intentions, and the spirit of this collaboration have forced me into a statement I didn’t want to make without the full facts. Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project, wouldn’t hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education. I have been working with my team ever since the situation was brought to my attention to get to the bottom of these incidents and at the same time find a solution that doesn’t harm all those that stand to benefit from this collaboration.

I am against discrimination of any kind, but if I make snap judgements, no matter who it’s towards, aren’t I committing the same sin as someone who profiles? I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position. Hopefully this brings forth a dialogue to effect real change. – Shawn “JAY Z” Carter
