Mike Wallace Posts Controversial Tweet About Jason Collins Being Gay, Apologizes

Much of the Twitter reaction to Jason Collins coming out of the closet as major American team sports’ first active gay athlete has been positive.

But NFL wide receiver Mike Wallace of the Miami Dolphins was less than supportive in a since-deleted tweet about the news.

Wallace wrote, “All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH…” (see screenshot below).

Many outlets called Wallace’s comment homophobic, and his name was soon a Twitter trending topic.

Wallace subsequently erased the message and explained, “I’m not bashing anybody don’t have anything against anyone I just don’t understand it.”

The NFL player then deleted that tweet, instead writing, “Never said anything was right or wrong I just said I don’t understand!! Deeply sorry for anyone that I offended.”

Celebrities React to NBA Star Jason Collins Coming Out as Gay

Celebrities are sounding off on Twitter about Jason Collins becoming the first active professional athlete to come out as gay.

Appearing on the new cover of Sports Illustrated on Monday, the basketball player writes, “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.”

Now, Hollywood is taking to social media to react to the historical moment and applaud Collins’ decision.

Jason Collins has become the first openly gay NBA player, and the first man in major American team sports to come out of the closet during his active career.

The 12-year veteran writes in Sports Illustrated, “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.”

Collins continues, “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”
