Lance Bass said Jason Collins reached out to him for advice before becoming the first NBA player to come out.

On his Sirius XM radio show “Dirty Pop,” the former *NSYNC singer revealed Collins has “been trying to plan this for a very long time, contemplating if he wanted to do this.”

“In fact, he said he was going to call me months ago but was too scared, because he wanted to tell me,” added Bass, who knows Collins through mutual pal Joanna Garcia.

Earlier today, Collins told George Stephanopoulos on “Good Morning America” the response to him coming out was “incredible,” and that he didn’t know “of any other gay players in the NBA.”

ESPN’s Chris Broussard on Jason Collins: Homosexuality Is A “Sin” – WATCH VIDEO

Jason Collins’ decision to become the NBA’s first openly gay player has generated a big responsenot all of it supportive.

One of the reactions getting a lot of attention on Monday came from ESPN commentator Chris Broussard, who, during an “Outside The Lines” discussion with the network’s writer-pundit LZ Granderson (himself gay), declared that homosexuality represented “sin” and an “open rebellion to God.”

Asked about Collin’s identification as a Christian, Broussard remarked:

“Personally, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly… like premarital sex between heterosexuals. If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says ‘you know them by their fruits.’

“It says that, you know, that’s a sin. And if you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality — adultery, fornication, premarital sex between heterosexuals — whatever it may be, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ.”

“So I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don’t think the Bible would characterize them as a Christian.”

Mike Wallace Posts Controversial Tweet About Jason Collins Being Gay, Apologizes

2:23 pm, April 29th, 2013

(GettyImages.com)

Much of the Twitter reaction to Jason Collins coming out of the closet as major American team sports’ first active gay athlete has been positive.

But NFL wide receiver Mike Wallace of the Miami Dolphins was less than supportive in a since-deleted tweet about the news.

Wallace wrote, “All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH…” (see screenshot below).

Many outlets called Wallace’s comment homophobic, and his name was soon a Twitter trending topic.

Wallace subsequently erased the message and explained, “I’m not bashing anybody don’t have anything against anyone I just don’t understand it.”

The NFL player then deleted that tweet, instead writing, “Never said anything was right or wrong I just said I don’t understand!! Deeply sorry for anyone that I offended.”

What do you think about what Wallace said?
