Star Trek Into Darkness Wins Weekend Box Office; Iron Man 3 Takes Second Place

Star Trek Into Darkness beamed its way up to the top of the box office in its debut weekend, earning $70.6 million.

Getting knocked off its previous perch and coming in second was Iron Man 3 with $35.2 million.

The Great Gatsby took third place  $23.4 million.

Pain and Gain and The Croods came in fourth and fifth with $3.1 million and $2.75 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were 42 ($2.73 million), Oblivion ($2.2 million), Mud ($2.16 million), The Peeples ($2.15 million) and The Big Wedding ($1.1 million).

Iron Man 3 Wins Box Office; The Great Gatsby Comes in Strong Second

Iron Man 3 won the weekend at the box office, beating the highly-anticipated The Great Gatsby, which debuted in second.

Iron Man 3 took in $72.4 million to keep the top spot.

Gatsby came in a strong second with $51.1 million.

And in a distant third was Pain and Gain with $5 million.

Tyler Perry’s latest, The Peeples, and 42 secured fourth and fifth places with $4.8 million and $4.6 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Oblivion ($3.8 million), The Croods, ($3.6 million), The Big Wedding ($2.5 million), Mud ($2.3 million), and Oz The Great and Powerful ($800,000).

Iron Man 3 Wins Weekend With HUGE Box Office; Second Biggest Film Open Ever

Iron Man 3 crushed the competition to easily win the box office’s top spot.

The third movie in the Marvel franchise, starring Robert Downey Jr., earned a whopping $173.5 million this weekend, making it the second biggest domestic open ever after its fellow franchise film, The Avengers.

Coming in at a very distant second place was Pain and Gain with $7.6 million.

Nabbing third place was 42 with $6.2 million.

Oblivion and The Croods took fourth and fifth places with $5.8 million and $4.5 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Big Wedding ($3.9 million), Mud ($2.2 million), Oz the Great and Powerful ($1.8 million), Scary Movie 5 ($1.4 million), and The Place Beyond the Pines ($1.3 million).
