The Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller Oblivion is expected to win the weekend box office.
Set in a mostly empty post-apocalyptic Earth, the movie is tracking toward $38 million and first place, if early estimates hold.
Jackie Robinson biopic 42 should finish in second place with $17.5 million or so, ahead of animated family film The Croods ($9.7 million).
The spoof Scary Movie 5 and action-adventure sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation are tangling for fourth place, with each release on pace for about $5.8 million.
The Place Beyond the Pines, starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, is on pace for $4.5 million and the #6 spot.
Meanwhile, four films — Olympus Has Fallen, Evil Dead, Jurassic Park 3D, and Oz the Great and Powerful — are each projected to earn between $3 and $4 million for the period.
