Frozen Ices Out Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones at Weekend Box Office

Frozen continues to heat up the box office.

The animated Disney film won the weekend with $20.7 million, beating the $18.2 million debut of horror spinoff Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.

The epic adventure The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug came in third with $16.3 million.

In fourth place with $13.4 million, The Wolf of Wall Street narrowly topped American Hustle, whose $13.2 million take landed it in fifth.

Rounding out the Top 5 were Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues ($11.1 million), Saving Mr. Banks ($9.1 million), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ($8. 2 million), The Hunger Games: Catching ($7.4 million), and Grudge Match ($5.4 million)

The Hobbit and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Locked in Tight Box Office Battle

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is battling Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues for box office supremacy on the weekend before Christmas.

Both movies are on pace for roughly $30 million, according to early estimates.

The animated family flick Frozen should place third with about $20 million.

American Hustle expands to wide release this weekend and is projected to earn about $18 million.

Another Jennifer Lawrence movie, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is in a tight race with Saving Mr. Banks for fifth place.

Both movies are tracking toward $9.5 million.

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas and Walking with Dinosaurs are both looking at $8 million weekends.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug won the weekend box office’s top spot with $73.7 million in ticket sales.

The animated family film Frozen came in second with $22.2 million, while Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas nabbed third place with $16.1 million.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Thor: The Dark World came in fourth and fifth places with $13.1 million and $2.7 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Out of the Furnace ($2.3 million), Delivery Man ($1.9 million), Philomena ($1.8 million), The Book Thief ($1.7 million), and Homefront ($1.6 million).
