Charlie Hunnam is speaking out for the first time about his controversial casting in Fifty Shades of Grey.

As Gossip Cop previously reported, the actor will star as Christian Grey, the young businessman who starts an explicit erotic relationship with a college student, who will be played by Dakota Johnson.

The casting has received a largely negative reaction from fans, some of whom have already petitioned to have the stars replaced.

But Hunnam is convinced he’s right for the part.

“As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us,” the “Sons of Anarchy” star told reporters at the series’ season 6 premiere event on Saturday.

He continued, “It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”

Hunnam’s interest in the role was initially piqued by a meeting with director Sam Taylor-Johnson, and then increased when he spent time pouring over the novel by E L James.

“I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was, and felt even more excited about the prospect of bringing him to life,” revealed the actor.

Noting that his girlfriend encouraged him to take the role, Hunnam said he has no qualms about the project’s raunchy material.

“My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. It was incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man,” he said, according to THR. “I mean I’m 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.”

News of Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson being cast as the leads in the film version of Fifty Shades of Grey led to outrage by fans of the erotic trilogy, who created a Change.org petition to have the stars replaced with Matt Bomer as Christian Grey and Alexis Bledel as Anastasia Steele.

The petition was signed by tens of thousands of fans, and read, “Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too. So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING.”

Now, Bomer is responding to the casting controversy.

On Thursday, he told ETOnline that while he is “so grateful for the fans and touched,” he is “looking forward to seeing the movie with Charlie and Dakota.”

What do you think about Bomer’s response?

Robert Pattinson Devastated He Didn’t Get Fifty Shades of Grey Role?

Truth rating: 0

Robert Pattinson is devastated he wasn’t cast as Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, reports the National Enquirer.

The magazine, which bogusly claimed the actor was being recruited for Scientology by Kirstie Alley, now claims Pattinson was “very disappointed” when he learned Charlie Hunnam scored the role over him.

A so-called “insider” tells the tab, “Rob was dying to play the iconic ‘Fifty Shades’ hero, Christian,” but studio execs supposedly “feel Rob’s much too closely identified with the ‘Twilight’ movies.”

Well if that was really the case, how has Pattinson’s career survived the end of the Twilight franchise?

Anyway, the purported “source” goes on to allege that Pattinson is now “angrily telling pals it’s one thing to lose this plum role to an established star, like, say, Channing Tatum, but to lose it to some unknown actor is downright insulting.”

No, it’s this story that’s insulting.

While some say Pattinson may have been wanted for the part, there has been absolutely zero evidence to suggest that the actor was interested in joining the film.

Moreover, the Hollywood Reporter says that Ryan Gosling was actually the top choice for the role, and has published a number of other names that were being considered — but the magazine made no mention of Pattinson.

In any case Gossip Cop checked in with a source close to the actor, who tells us the tab’s story is “untrue.”
