Lee Daniels’ The Butler Wins Weekend Box Office Over We’re The Millers, Kick-Ass 2

Lee Daniels’ The Butler is expected to win the weekend box office, according to early estimates.

The historical drama, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, is on pace for approximately $26 million and the #1 spot in its debut.

Holdover comedy We’re The Millers and new release Kick-Ass 2 are expected to battle for second place at $16 million or so.

Matt Damon’s sci-fi action flick Elysium and the animated Planes should round out the Top 5.

New films including Jobs and Paranoia are currently lagging in projections and are expected to finish with disappointing weekend totals.

Elysium Tops Weekend Box Office Over We’re The Millers and Planes

Elysium won the weekend box office, debuting ahead of two other new releases.

The Matt Damon sci-fi movie snagged the #1 spot with $30.5 million

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis’ raunchy comedy We’re The Millers finished in second with $26.6 million.

And the animated Planes nabbed third with $22.5 million.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, the mythological adventure sequel, and the Denzel Washington–Mark Wahlberg shoot-em-up film 2 Guns came in fourth and fifth places with $14.6 million and $11.1 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Smurfs 2 ($9.5 million), The Wolverine ($8 million), The Conjuring ($6.7 million), Despicable Me 2 ($5.7 million), and Grown Ups 2 ($3.7 million).

New Elysium Extended Trailer with Matt Damon — WATCH HERE!

Elysium, starring Matt Damon, has a new extended trailer.

The movie takes placed in the year 2154, where the privileged live on Elysium — a man-made space station, where war, illness, and poverty don’t exist.

Stuck on a ruined Earth and desperately seeking medical care, Damon becomes determined to be the first person to break in to the ultra-exclusive enclave.

Jodie Foster also stars, as the Elysium secretary equally determined to defend the luxurious metropolis from all unwanted visitors.

The film opens in theaters on August 9.
