BOX OFFICE

(20th Century Fox)

The Wolverine has clawed to the top of the box office.

Hugh Jackman’s latest outing as the X-Men mutant should open with an estimated $55 million weekend, good enough for first place over last week’s champ The Conjuring ($24 million) and the blockbuster animated sequel Despicable Me 2 ($16 million).

Another family flick, Turbo, is projected to finish in fourth place with roughly $13 million, just ahead of Adam Sandler’s ensemble laugh-fest Grown Ups 2 ($11.5 million).

Action-comedy Red 2 is tracking toward $8.5 million and the #6 spot.

Pacific Rim ($7.5 million) should inch ahead of The Heat ($7 million) for seventh place, with R.I.P.D. ($6 million) and Fruitvale Station ($4 million) rounding out the Top Ten.

Despicable Me 2 Explodes Fourth of July Holiday Weekend Box Office (UPDATED)

10:38 am, July 7th, 2013

(Universal)

Despicable Me 2 set off fireworks at the Fourth of July holiday weekend box office, expecting to rake in at least $140.5 million over the course of five days.

The sequel to the 2010 movie was one of the top openings for an animated film of all time.

Trailing in second is The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, which earned a estimated $48.5 million, far from enough to make up for its massive budget.

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s The Heat came in third at $29.3 million, followed by Monsters University ($24.6 million) and World War Z ($21 million).
