Gravity Still in Orbit: Top Spot at Box Office

Gravity is still in orbit above the rest of the box office.

The Sandra BullockGeorge Clooney space thriller earned $44.2 million this weekend, making it an easy #1 once again.

Tom Hanks’ piracy thriller Captain Phillips opened in second place with $26 million.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 took in $14.2 million, good enough for the #3 spot.

The star-studded action romp Machete Kills hit $3.7 million in its debut, putting it neck-and-neck with Runner, Runner, which took in the same amount.

Rounding out the Top 10 were: Prisoners ($3.6 million), Insidious: Chapter 2 ($2.7 million), Don Jon ($2.3 million), Rush ($2.3 million), and Baggage Claim ($2 million).

Gravity Rockets To Record Weekend

Gravity, the visually wondrous space drama starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, opened to $55.5 million at the box office, surpassing early estimates.

That made the Oscar contender the biggest non-sequel October debut ever.

In second place was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

The animated family film took in $21.5 million.

Runner Runner, with Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, opened in the #3 spot with $7.9 million.

Two holdovers — Prisoners ($5.7 mllion) and Rush ($4.5 million) — came in forth and fifth, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were: Baggage Claim ($4.5 million), Don Jon ($4.2 million), Insidious: Chapter 2 ($3.7), Pulling Strings ($2.7), and Enough Said ($2.1 million).

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 Wins Weekend Box Office

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 made it rain at the box office.

The animated sequel earned $35 million to win the weekend.

Prisoners took second place with $11 million, and Chris Hemsworth’s racing flick Rush finished close behind with $10.6 million.

In fourth and fifh were newbies Baggage Claim and Don Jon, which raked in $9.2 million and $8.8 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were: Insidious: Chapter 2 ($6.6 million), The Family ($3.6 million), Instructions Not Included ($3.6 million), We’re The Millers ($2.8 million), and Lee Daniels’ The Butler ($2.5 million)..
