Two explosions rocked Boston on Monday afternoon, close to the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

The suspected bombs went off, one followed by another, while 26,000 runners were participating in the race and 500,000 spectators watched the sporting event nearby.

The explosions came after the winners crossed the finish line, though there were still many runners in the race.

This year’s marathon was the 117th annual race and was held in memory of the children and teachers killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December.

After the explosions, celebrities quickly took to Twitter to send prayers to the dead and injured, trade information, and even comment on the media coverage.

New Kids on the Block singer Joey McIntyre competed in the race, tweeting that he escaped the area safely.

“There was an explosion by the finish line about 5 minutes after I finished,” he wrote. ”I’m ok but I’m sure there are many hurt.”
