Keith Urban Coming Back to American Idol; Jennifer Lopez “Close” to Return

Keith Urban is coming back to “American Idol.”

The country music singer will return as a judge when the show’s 13th season debuts in January 2014, FOX confirmed on Thursday.

He’ll be the only holdover from last season, with fellow panelists Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Randy Jackson all having departed.

Urban tweeted, “Thrilled to be back on @AmericanIdol with my pal @RyanSeacrest and dying to know who the other judges will be!!!!”

Meanwhile, an insider tells Gossip Cop that Jennifer Lopez, who judged on seasons 10 and 11, is very “close” to making a deal to return to the singing competition.

American Idol Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe Confirms He Was Fired

“American Idol” isn’t just shaking up its judges panel.

The show will have new executives behind-the-scenes as well when it returns for season 13.

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe confirmed on Twitter on Saturday that he was let go from the music competition series.

“just had 10 days in the Bahamas, rain everyday. I get back to the States and get fired,” he tweeted.

Noting that he’ll still be an EP and judge on “So You Think You Can Dance,” and insisting that “FOX still loves me,” Lythgoe said the “Idol” changes aren’t “a personal thing.”

“they just feel IDOL needs new leadership after 12 Seasons,” he explained.

Fellow executive producer Ken Warwick was also let go.

Judges Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj have all announced their exits from the show, while Keith Urban’s “Idol” future remains unclear.

The first round of contestant auditions — without the judges — is slated to begin July 11.

Jennifer Lopez Told FOX She Wants To Return To American Idol?

“Jennifer Lopez has told FOX executives she wants an ‘American Idol’ redux in the wake of Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson’s exits,” reports RadarOnline.

A supposed “source” tells the webloid, “J.LO’s manager, Benny Medina, was in talks with FOX even before Mariah and Nicki announced their departures last week.”

The alleged “insider” claims, “Benny told FOX that she does indeed want to return. They’re talking.”

“Negotiations are in their infant stages, but they’re underway to get her back to the judges’ table,” adds the so-called source.

Really?

Nope.

Actually, negotiations are in their nonexistent stages, because a close Lopez friend tells Gossip Cop “no” discussions are currently taking place about the singer-actress returning to the show.

Oops.
