Adrian Peterson’s two-year-old son has died.

The NFL star running back’s child was allegedly beaten by Joseph Patterson, the boyfriend of the little boy’s mother.

The child was taken to a hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Wednesday after law enforcement officers responded to a call and found the boy unresponsive.

Authorities determined that he’d suffered injuries to his head consistent with abuse.

Before the child’s death, Patterson was set to be charged with aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated domestic assault.

Given the day’s tragic development, it’s likely those charges will be upped.

Earlier on Friday, Peterson had thanked fans for their support.

“I should start off by saying I really appreciate all the support that I’ve been receiving from fans, the Vikings organization,” the Minnesota Vikings star told the press. “This is a private matter and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand. Thanks.”

He said that he expected to play on Sunday — but that was before the final, awful news about his son.
