Greg Kinnear in “Rake”

Following a season in which Fox was saddled with double-digit ratings losses and a weak bench, the network is looking to bulk up its options heading into the 2013-14 season.

Having already renewed scripted entries Glee, Bones, New Girl, Raising Hope, The Following and The Mindy Project, the network is looking to fill what few holes it has with stars including Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear, Karl Urban and Ramon Rodriguez. Less than year after Fringe ended its run, Fox is turning to the beloved sci-fi drama’s producers J.H. Wyman, J.J. Abrams (Almost Human) and Roberto Orci (Sleepy Hollow) for new fare.

It is worth noting that Fox has ordered four drama pilots to series, doubling last year’s particularly small commitment. The latter included since canceled The Mob Doctor as well as midseason effort The Following.

Pilots not moving forward at Fox are Boomerang, Delirium and The List, with Wild Blue pushed off-cycle.

NBC is getting into the home makeover business.

The network on Monday ordered to series Renovation Nation, a 10-episode makeover competition series hosted by interior and product designer Nate Berkus.

The series will feature home builders and designers competing for a cash prize, with voting to determine the final winner and two viewers ultimately awarded dream homes.

The series will feature designers and renovators from across the country, with Berkus hosting, judging, advocating and mentoring contestants every week.

The series will travel across the country with two teams tackling two new homes each week and concluding in a live finale.

“We are delighted to work with the incredibly talented Nate Berkus, whose expertise, creativity and passion for design are unparalleled in scope,” NBC alternative and late-night programming president Paul Telegdy said. “We believe we are in a time where Americans want to feel empowered and inspired to make changes to their homes; changes that will not only increase their value and quality of life but at the same time – not break the bank.  Our goal is to showcase incredibly diverse architecture, impeccable design and epic transformations unlike anything you’ve seen before.”

The series hails from Universal Television, with Craig Plestis (Minute to Win It), Tom Shelly (Survivor) and Berkus on board to executive produce. Casting and a formal premiere date will be announced later.

For Oprah Winfrey protégé Berkus, the series comes after his Sony Pictures Television-produced syndicated talk show ended its run after two low-rated seasons.

Renovation Nation comes as NBC is looking to rebuild its fortunes this season. The network, powered by football and The Voice, started the season in first place but has fallen to fifth with its singing competition on hiatus.

CBS is adding bit of Homeland to its drama pilots.

The network has picked up Second Sight, a detective drama from Homeland EP/director Michael Cuesta and CSI‘s Carol Mendelsohn.

Based on the Clive Owen U.K. series, the drama centers on a homicide detective who is going blind but turns his affliction into an advantage as he uses his heightened senses and intuition to solve crimes.

Cuesta will write and executive produce the drama alongside his brother, Gerald. The former will also direct. Mendelsohn also is on board to executive produce the CBS Television Studios entry alongside Julie Weitz (Widow Detective) and Paula Milne, who created the U.K. series. Nick Reed and Phil Goldfine also will exec produce.

Cuesta becomes the first Homeland producer to score a pilot order this season after multiple projects from showrunner Howard Gordon failed to make it past the development stage among the broadcast networks.

The order for Second Sight comes a year after Michael Cuesta, who is under an overall deal at CBS TV Studios, directed the pilot for CBS’ breakout hit Elementary last pilot season. His credits include Dexter, Six Feet Under and Blue Bloods, for which he also directed the pilot. He’s repped by WME and Frankfurt Kurnit.

Gerald Cuesta’s credits also include indie features L.I.E. and Roadie, both of which he wrote with his brother.

The drama marks the network’s eighth drama pilot order so far this season, including the NCIS: LA spinoff, Jerry Bruckheimer‘s Toni Collette starrer Hostages and Shawn Ryan and Eddie Murphy‘s Beverly Hills Cop follow-up.

Second Sight marks the latest British series adaptation set up this pilot season, joining ABC’s Spy and Pulling and NBC’s The Gates, among others.
