Marvel Crowns a New Star-Lord for Animated ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’

Guardians of the Galaxy Star-Lord Animated - H 2015

Marvel Studios/Disney Xd

The rollout of voice talent for the upcoming Disney XD series Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues with the revelation that a Boy Meets World veteran is headed into deep space. Yes, Will Friedle — A.K.A. Cory’s older brother Eric in the Disney series — is Star-Lord, man.

Beyond his appearances Boy Meets World (and its spin-off, Girl Meets World), Friedle has an extensive resume when it comes to voice acting, having played the lead characters in Batman Beyond and Thundercats, as well as major roles in Batman: The Brave and The Bold, Kim Possible and Transformers: Robots in Disguise. He’s no stranger to the Marvel Animated Universe, either, having played Deadpool in the Ultimate Spider-Man series.

Friedle is the third actor to be announced for the upcoming animated series based on last year’s hit movie, following yesterday’s reveals of Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot and Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon. The new series, executive produced by Marvel’s Alan Fine, Joe Quesada, Dan Buckley and Jeph Loeb, will launch as part of the Marvel Universe block on Disney XD later this year.

Sony Looks Inside Its PlayStation Original ‘Powers’

Powers Sharlto Copley Still - H 2014

The launch of Powers, the PlayStation Original series based on the popular Brian Michael Bendis/Michael Avon Oeming comic book is just weeks away, and to tease what to expect from the police procedural set in a superhero world, Sony has released an “Inside Look” at the show.

“In Powers, we have a story where people have powers and they don’t care what they do with them — just like humans do in this world, if they get to a position where they have fame [and] just do what they want with it,” Eddie Izzard, who plays the troublesome Wolfe in the series, explains in the video. In addition to featuring interviews with the main cast and crew of the show, Powers: An Inside Look also delves into the origins of the original comic book series and its translation to the screen.

“We are a Rated-R independent comic, about superheroes at their worst, and we needed a home like PlayStation,” Bendis says about the home for the series, while Sharlto Copley (who plays lead detective Christian Walker) adds that the venue “hasn’t affected how they make the show. If anything, it’s given us more license to make the show a little more gritty, a little darker.”

The first three episodes of Powers will debut Mar. 10 on Sony’s PlayStation Store, with new episodes following weekly thereafter. PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to watch the season for free.

Guardians of the Galaxy Cartoon - H - 2015

Marvel

Step aside, Vin Diesel — now someone else gets to say “I Am Groot.” Marvel Television has revealed that Kevin Michael Richardson will be voicing the fan-favorite character in the upcoming Disney XD animated series Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

This won’t be Richardson’s first Marvel voice role; he’s previously played time-traveling mutant Bishop in Wolverine and the X-Men, and super-spy Nick Fury in the Super Hero Squad animated series. He’s also provided voices for characters from Marvel competitor DC, including Trigon on Teen Titans and the Joker in the 2004 series The Batman.

Richardson is the first actor to be announced for the animated series based on James Gunn’s successful movie from last summer. The series was initially announced at last year’s New York Comic Con, and will be produced by Marvel with Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb acting as executive producers.

Additional members of the voice cast will be announced throughout the week.
