Joseph Gordon-Levitt opens up in the October issue of Men’s Health about the making of his porn-themed directorial debut Don Jon.
The film stars Gordon-Levitt as a gym- and women-obsessed guy whose new relationship is threatened by his porn addiction.
Gordon-Levitt cast Scarlett Johansson as the object of his affection, an idea he had in mind long before the two ever crossed paths.
“I didn’t know Scarlett, but I spent more than a year with the image of her in my head playing this character,” he tells the magazine, adding, “She couldn’t not do this.”

But it wasn’t just Johansson’s looks that scored her the role.
“Scarlett is a gorgeous, gorgeous woman, but if you just compare purely physical features, plenty of girls are just as gorgeous,” explains Gordon-Levitt. ”But she creates this extra something. It’s in her walk, her eye contact. The total package is just off the charts.”
So how does the actor himself really feel about pornography?
“Porn’s fine. I’m aware that it can be hateful toward women. It can be addictive. It can get ugly. But it’s only damaging if you allow it to be,” says Gordon-Levitt.
