John Oliver Wraps Up ‘Daily Show’ Hosting Gig Thursday (Video)

John Oliver will host his last new episode of The Daily Show on Thursday.

Oliver has been filling in for Jon Stewart while Stewart directs his first movie, Rosewater, in the Middle East. The British comedian began his tenure as host June 10 and will wrap up Thursday.

After this week, the show will go on a two-week hiatus, as it's done at the end of the summer in the past, and Stewart will return to the hosting chair on Tuesday, Sept. 3, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Q&A: Guest Host John Oliver Will Try Not to Destroy 'The Daily Show'

During his time as temporary host, Oliver has opened each show with a joking explanation for Stewart's absence: Last night, Oliver explained that Stewart was at training camp with the New York Giants.

Ratings for the show have been steady since Stewart's departure, but Oliver's first week actually outperformed the most recent shows with Stewart at the helm.

Oliver tweeted Sunday that this was his final week in the hosting chair, writing, "My last week of summer hosting starts tomorrow! It's your final chance to be justifiably disappointed that Jon Stewart isn't back yet."

He also mentioned that his time was winding down during an interview with Regis Philbin on Wednesday, after Philbin declared he was funny, an endorsement Oliver said he'd been waiting for all summer.

"How long are you going to stay because if Stewart stays away much longer he's out of a job?" Philbin asked.

"I think that's not the case," Oliver said. "I think contractually and physically, I have one more day. You are my penultimate guest."

When asked whether he had any tips for Oliver's final show, Philbin joked "I wish I was on it" and claimed he would have dressed up like Bette Midler and sung "Nobody Does It Better."

Doing the honors as Oliver's final guest will be Simon Pegg. No word on whether he plans to sing.
