The 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on Thursday — check out the full list of nominees here — but not every adored series or individual made the cut.

While “American Horror Story,” “Game of Thrones,” and “30 Rock” piled up huge totals of nominations (and Netflix made history with multiple nods for online originals like “House of Cards”), stars like Kevin Bacon, Steve Buscemi, Melissa McCarthy, and Jon Cryer were left on the outside looking in, and favorites like “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Good Wife” lost out in big categories.

And the exclusion of Tatiana Maslany, the talented lead actress of “Orphan Black,” has left many observers baffled.
