Syfy Heralds the Sharknado With Shark-Centric Movie Marathon

What could be better than one gonzo shark-themed disaster movie? For Syfy, the answer appears to be "All the gonzo shark-themed disaster movies." To make Thursday's premiere of Sharknado all the more of an event, the cable channel is preparing viewers with a day-long marathon of seven additional movies about Selachimorpha attacking. Just think of it as a more exciting, shorter version of Shark Week.

Mere hours before a tornado filled with sharks hits Los Angeles - No, really, that's the plot of Sharknado, which stars former Beverly Hills 90210's Ian Ziering and former starlet Tara Reid -- Syfy will do its best to strengthen viewers' resolve with a marathon of Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus, Malibu Shark Attack, Sharktopus, Swamp Shark and Super Shark, with 2-Headed Shark Attack and Shark Zone acting as after-the-fact chasers later in the night.

Sadly, despite what it may look like, Syfy's Thursday isn't not all-sharks-all-the-time; amidst the various shark flicks, there are re-runs of Defiance and Primeval: New World, neither of which seem to be offering episodes with a particular fishy focus. Will these two episodes break the magic spell of the New Shark Order, or provide the breathing room that our finny friends need in order to lull us into a false sense of security?

Only two things are certain. Firstly, Syfy is really, really committing to this shark bit, and that kind of dedication should always be applauded. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, as awesome as Sharknado sounds, the fact that the channel can run seven similar movies on the same day may mean it's time that someone holds a shark intervention before it's too late.

Sharknado airs 9pm Eastern on Thursday. The sharkfest begins twelve hours earlier, with Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus.
