My Chemical Romance Alums Take Over ‘Aquabats!’ (Exclusive Video)

The Aquabats! get a visit from some My Chemical Romance alums this weekend.

Former MCR frontman Gerard Way recently teamed up with Christian Jacobs, creator and executive producer of The Aquabats! Super Show!, for an episode of Hub Network’s live-action kids show. Way co-directed and co-wrote Saturday’s episode, which features a guest-star appearance by his brother and former MCR bandmate, bass player Mikey Way.

Their episode — which is titled “Anti-bats!” — finds two competing bands who are seeking revenge on the Aquabats! uniting with evil Silver Skull to become the Anti-bats! Meanwhile, Ricky (Richard Falomir) abandons the Aquabats! for newfound love and must choose between his new girlfriend and saving his friends as the mighty Anti-bats close in. Martin Starr (Knocked Up) and Noel Wells (Upright Citizens Brigade) also guest-star.

The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive clip from the episode, which was co-written by Jacobs (who also created Yo Gabba Gabba) and executive producer Jason deVilliers, the latter of whom co-directed.

Gerard Way and Jacobs recently told THR how the collaboration came about.

“I had done an interview at San Diego Comic-Con — we were doing comics for the band — and they asked me what I wanted to do next. I had had Bandit, my daughter, and naturally I wanted to be on Yo Gabba Gabba, so I threw it out there,” he said. “The universe works in awesome ways. Christian was on a flight with Frank [Iero, guitarist for My Chemical Romance]. … And then next thing I know, Christian and I are on the phone and collaborating on a musical segment. … We hit it off and met on the set and stayed in touch, and he kindly offered me the opportunity to write for Aquabats!”

Jacobs hopes to collaborate with Way again in the future.

“Hopefully we’ll be lucky enough to do some more episodes [of Aquabats!],” he said. “But beyond that as well, I’d love to keep working together and get more things going.”

The Aquabats!, from Awesome Forces Productions, airs at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on Saturdays on Hub Network. Jacobs also stars in the series alongside Chad Larson, Ian Fowles and James Briggs.
