Colbert fans will remember that he took off a few days in February 2012 to care for his ailing mother. When he returned to the show, he sent a message to her: "One more thing. Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady."

Lorna Colbert was an adored wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to being the matriarch of a family of 82, Lorna Colbert was an accomplished artist, a church leader, a businesswoman, a supporter of the arts and a woman whose profound faith was apparent in her daily life.
