John Mayer traded in his guitar pick for a paintbrush last week, helping build homes for military veterans in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The musician worked on the houses as part of Bob Woodruff’s Veterans Build 2013 campaign, which Mayer got wind of through his friend Roger Waters, founding member of Pink Floyd.

Mayer, who has his own foundation that supports veterans, has said he became interested in helping army families during a 2008 visit to a military camp.
