Rick Ross is apologizing for lyrics in his song “U.O.E.N.O” that many listeners interpreted to be pro-rape.
In the track — a collaboration with Rocko released in January but prompting outcry in recent weeks — Ross raps, ”Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.”
Molly is a common street name for the drug MDMA.
Ross initially claimed the lines were “misinterpreted,” but after the women’s group UltraViolet announced a protest and encouraged companies — including Reebok, for whom he’s a spokesman — to cut ties with him, the rapper offered an apology on Twitter.
“I dont condone rape.Apologies for the #lyric interpreted as rape. #BOSS,” he tweeted Thursday.
He added, “Apologies to my many business partners,who would never promote violence against women. @ReebokClassics @ultraviolet.”
UltraViolet responded on Twitter, “@rickyrozay We appreciate that you don’t condone rape but what’s upsetting is that you’re rapping about it & don’t know it
“@rickyrozay slipping a woman a drug and “enjoying” her is rape. #CONSENT #EndRapeCulture,” they added.
Their protest, held outside a Reebok store in Manhattan, still took place Thursday as planned.
