Rihanna showed up several hours late to a Friday appearance at a Chicago high school whose students had won the star’s “Shine Bright Like a Diamond” video contest honoring community service — not that most of the young fans seemed to mind.

Students had gathered in the high school gym on the first day of spring break for what was originally supposed to be a 1 p.m. meeting with the performer, who didn’t actually take the stage until approximately 5:30 p.m.

When she finally arrived, Rihanna was met with cheers and applause, and she reciprocated the admiration.

“This is awesome. I wanted to come here to this high school because I was so impressed,” said Rihanna of the winning video (see below), adding, “I got to see a glimpse of some of the charity work that you guys have been doing… I was so impressed, I was very touched.”

The singer snapped photos with fans before departing for a concert at the United Center.
