“There are solutions we can agree on, even gun owners like us,” Giffords says in ad. “Take it from me, Congress must act. Let's get this done.
Former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords is calling for Congressional action to expand background checks for gun purchases in an ad by Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun control group she started with her husband Mark Kelly, that will air in Arizona and Iowa, according to the Associated Press.
"There are solutions we can agree on, even gun owners like us," Giffords says in the ad, set to the backdrop of black-and-white images from vigils following mass shootings in Colorado, Arizona, Wisconsin and Connecticut.
Americans for Responsible Solutions says it's spending six figures to air the ads in Arizona and Iowa, two states the group describe as having strong gun traditions. The states are also home to two Republicans on the Judiciary Committee who have an A rating with the National Rifle Association — Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona — as well as Sen. John McCain of Arizona who said he will likely support expanding background checks.
Giffords will appear at a news conference in Tucson Wednesday along with other survivors from the shooting at her constituent meeting two years ago.
