Oscar Pistorius, the Olympic runner, has been charged with murder in the death of a woman identified as his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
She was shot dead in Pistorius’ home in Pretoria, South Africa early Thursday.
He will formally be named the suspect when he makes his first court appearance on Friday.
Police have not revealed the exact circumstances of the fatal incident, although authorities say Pistorius and Steenkamp were the only people at home when the shooting occurred.
A law enforcement spokesperson said there had been “previous incidents” at the residence, including “allegations of a domestic nature.”
There was no sign of forced entry.
Local speculation that Pistorius had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder have not been confirmed.
Pistorius made history last summer when he competed in the London Olympics as a double-amputee sprinter nicknamed “Blade Runner.”
