Caleb Moore has died after succumbing to injuries stemming from a snowmobile accident during the X Games in Aspen, Colorado last week.

The 25-year-old athlete’s 450-pound vehicle landed on top of him while he was attempting a backflip during a freestyle event.

Moore’s family said in statement, “He will be truly missed and never forgotten,” adding, “The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for all the prayers and support they have received from all the fans, friends and family around the world that Caleb has inspired.”

This is the first death in the 17-year history of the X Games.

Moore suffered a concussion as a result of the January 24 accident, but upon checking into the hospital, he was found to have bleeding of the heart.

He later experienced a brain complication.

ESPN, which organizes the X Games, said in a statement, “As a result of this accident we will conduct a thorough review of this discipline and adopt any appropriate changes to future X Games.”

The network added, “Caleb was a four-time X Games medalist attempting a move he has landed several times previously.”
