The inaugural 9 p.m. airing of Girls was just shy of its 872,000-strong series premiere last summer, also falling short of the previous high set by the freshman finale (1 million viewers).

With encores, Girls brought in 1.6 million viewers for the night. That leaves the series on an early track to best last season's gross audience average of 4.1 million viewers -- which includes DVR, encores, On Demand and HBO Go views.

Enlightened, returning from more than a year off the air, enjoyed a small boost thanks to its more popular lead. The show pulled 300,000 viewers at 9:30 p.m., bring in a total of 609,000 with encores.

When the Laura Dern comedy opened in October 2011, on the network's less-watched Monday night, it averaged just 210,000 viewers.
