President Obama Tells Newtown Residents at Vigil: “You Are Not Alone” (VIDEO)

President Obama traveled to Newtown, Connecticut on Sunday, where he tried to provide comfort to a community grieving the loss of 20 children and six adults who were savagely murdered in a mass shooting on Friday.

At a vigil held at Newtown High School on Sunday night, the President spoke to the devastated residents who are still struggling to come to terms with the tragic events that unfolded at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Noting he came to “offer the love and prayers of a nation,” Obama told the crowd, “We gather here in memory of 20 beautiful children and six remarkable adults.”

“All across this land of ours we have wept with you,” said the President, adding, “Newtown, you are not alone.”

He vowed to “use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this.”

“We can’t tolerate this any more,” he added. “These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change.”

Obama, who wiped tears from his eyes at varying points, concluded his speech by reading the names of each child who died, as audience members sobbed in the background.

The President’s appearance came shortly after he met privately with each of the families who lost loved ones in the massacre.
