Lindsay Lohan made her much-hyped “comeback” as Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s “Liz & Dick” on Sunday, and the public (naturally) had a lot to say about the actress’ portrayal of the screen icon.

Unfortunately for Lohan, much of it was negative.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Tim Goodman said, “Lohan is woeful as Taylor from start to finish,” calling the TV movie “an instant classic of unintentional hilarity.”

Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly wrote, “No effort seems to have gone into Lohan’s preparation other than to have her eyes tinted Liz-violet,” adding, “Lohan should have shed her protective shell and made an effort to try and understand a psyche other than her own.”

The New York Times’ Alessandra Stanley offered, “There are moments in ‘Liz & Dick’ when Lindsay Lohan looks a lot like Elizabeth Taylor,” adding, “There are others in which she looks like Elizabeth Taylor doing a ‘Saturday Night Live’ impersonation of Lindsay Lohan.”

The reviews weren’t all thoroughly terrible, though.

Stanley noted that Lohan wasn’t “ridiculous” as Taylor, as many have critiqued, but that the actress was “oddly passive… in scenes that call for passion and caprice.”

And some viewers were excited to see Lohan in a starring role again, and felt she did her best to tackle the difficult role.

Either way, Lifetime expects huge ratings for the film.

“Liz & Dick” will re-air on Monday at 8 p.m.
