David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon Do Shows Without Audience During Hurricane Sandy

As Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast on Monday, concerts were canceled and Jimmy Kimmel had to shut down his special Brooklyn broadcast, but New York’s David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon decided to do their own late-night shows — with a twist.

They had no audiences.

Letterman walked onto the stage at an empty Ed Sullivan Theater and then sat behind his desk, reading the jokes he would have used for his monologue.

Later, guest Denzel Washington came in from the street in rain gear.

Meanwhile, Fallon’s show began with a cold open near Rockefeller Center, where the host explained what was going on, then went upstairs to his studio and started the show with a monologue to empty seats.

It was all a very bizarre departure from your typical Monday night late-night broadcasts.
