Mamie Gummer Taunts High Schooler on Emily Owens, M.D. Premiere

For Mamie Gummer, filming The CW's new series, Emily Owens, M.D., was like going back to high school -- literally!

Costarring in the medical drama alongside Aja Naomi King, Michael Rady and Justin Hartley, Gummer, 29, tells Us Weekly shooting the series reminded her of roaming the halls of Connecticut's Kent School.

"[Our show proves] how the politics of the hospital mimic that of high school and how you think you're done with high school, but you never really totally are," Gummer -- the daughter of Meryl Streep -- tells Us. "In any profession that still kind of exists -- that kind of hierarchy and [our show is] just about navigating your way through that."

As the preview above shows, Gummer's character Emily struggles to fit in as a first-year surgical intern at Denver Memorial Hospital -- especially when her high school nemesis (King) and med-school crush (Hartley) show up. Gummer's costar Hartley tells Us Emily Owens' leading lady pulls off her role quite seamlessly.

"Mamie's amazing. [She has] perfect comedic timing without trying to be funny," raves Hartley to Us of the actress (Oscar-winning mom Streep and sculptor husband Don Gummer are also parents to adult children Henry, Grace and Louisa). "[The show] pulls at your heartstrings a little, it's deep at moments, lighthearted at moments. I'm just so proud to be part of something fun and entertaining and exciting and frankly good."

Emily Owens, M.D. premieres Tuesday at 9 p.m. (EST) on The CW.
