“The New Normal” is running into controversy.
The upcoming NBC comedy, which centers on a gay couple and the single mom who becomes their surrogate, will not be aired by the network’s affiliate in Salt Lake City.
“We have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule,” said Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL-TV parent company Bonneville International.
He explained, “For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time.”
The show, from “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy, is set to debut in September and has also faced challenges by the conservative One Million Moms organization that last winter demanded JC Penney fire openly gay Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson.
Ellen Barkin, who co-stars on the show, is not happy.
The actress took to Twitter to slam the affiliate, writing, “Shame on u [KSL] not airing @NBCTheNewNormal So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?”
Later, she tweeted, “Anyone in Utah interested in @NBCTheNewNormal please clog up @ksl5tv feed 4 their blatantly homophobic decision 2 not air the show #KSLBigots.”
