Damascus is one of the world's oldest cities, as well as the capital of Syria. This afternoon rebels could be seen chanting “God is the Greatest” in unison as artillery exploded throughout the city.

This morning the Red Cross began describing the intensifying skirmishes between President Bashar al-Assad and organized resistance forces a "civil war." The video above depicts rebel fighters in the city center exchanging artillery fire with government forces. Fighting has recently escalated most fatally in the southern district of Damascus, one of the world's most ancient cities. Combat over the past year has resulted in a death toll now estimated at over 17,000.
